Even as the remains of cigar butts are still being discovered at the site of devastation, developers are hard at work at plans to put a new face on the town. The demolition of the 100 block of S Main is claimed to have been the responsibility of Al Kaidha and Associates. However, attempts at contacting them went unanswered. They are said to be somewhere in the mountains and valleys around Penobscot Knob.
Several companies have been soliciting for the property. One of the finalists withdrew it's bid at the last moment. That bid was for a G*Mitter Supercenter. A large national retail center that features under one roof, groceries, a bakery, banking, dry cleaning, a fur and pelt trading outpost, a Hebrew learning center, an oil refinery and the famous five and dime for which G*Mitter name is known. A spokesman for the developer said the 200,000 square foot megaplex just wouldn't fit there.
The sole remaining contender to anchor Main Street is now Dolinish Pharmacy. Dolinish has 4100 stores in 32 states including the District of Pittston. Some residents have expressed concern. When asked about the new pharmacy, one resident voiced his opinion as "..the hell we need that for?" Others expressed outrage with the traffic problems. "That's right, that's it, everybody for their f...ing selves", said one motorist when trying to enter the bank drive-thru.

I definetly would like to see a Dolinish pharmacy building, rather than a CVS in OF, but then again, let's not go there ( too much controversy).
oh, very nice job on the pharmacy picture. gotta say that i was getting worried about you cuz we had heard nada from you in a couple of weeks. thought you got sucked into a turnip vortex. say where did you get that other demolition picture? it's not one of the ones that tony w sent me. and by the way, this is RJ
Be kind, it was my first PhotoShop and it took waaay too long. I had to get the hang of layers and how their properties affect the whole thing. Screw tutorials. Regarding the demolition, it was one of Tony W's pics, just cropped.
Did you get that from the current issue of RJ Today?
Well, I was "Up the Road'and it's gone, it's all gone. The last building, that housed Anzelmi Optical was demolished today. Funny thing, as they were destroying the properties, a sign on the side of this building was revealed. No one I've talked to seems to remember anything about it. It was some luncheonette and ice cream place, couldn't make out the name. Another just below that read "shoes for the entire family". Anybody have a clue ???? I'm hoping to see an article in the Triboro maybe.
That's it, that's the sign ? Anybody remember anything about it ?
pk, do you have photoshop elements? i've been using that for a couple of years now, you'll like it once you get the hang of it. kind of like i'm getting the hang of dreamweaver and fireworks now. i did figure out how to do direct ftp upload to comcast so that makes it 6.02x10 to the 23rd times easier. tony sent me some more demolition pictures that are now on the link on the other blog. paula, those old signs on the brick wall are just the coolest. i would love to find out what era they were from. imagine not having to go to pittston to buy shoes! but just seeing the whole fricken block devastated is just very sad to me. it's like they cut the heart out of the town.
Ya, sad, really sad. Makes me feel ancient too. Alot of memories gone.
flash movies! nicely done. fits the new template better.
Ok, now this is going to take some figuring out ! Did we have to go high tech ! Oh well.....here goes.
BTW: SlideShow photo's courtesy of Mordy. Thank's Tony.
I feel as old as those buildings. And as useless technologically. I keep saying, "But I used to be smart!" I should be saying, "I used to have time to learn new things!" I think that's what the dinosaurs said, too.
Well,
My good friend PK has done it again. I didn't even grow up "up the road", but working with you from 1991 to 2001 or so gave me some good learning. I still sing the 'Eddie Dolinish' song and, at 3AM, some of my customers look at me like I'm whacked. They're right - first off it's 3AM and I'm running a 24 hour grocery store. That's whacked from right there. Nice job PK. Talk soon.
I am waiting for the audio clip of that "Eddie Dolinish" song
For those not enlightened. It is not a song per se. It is the embodyment of all music. It is all that which is, growing beyond its original boundaries. It has survived decades of world conflict and political change. It is generational as some can attest. Ben? It is all that and much much more.
oh boy, joan, i'm glad you were the one to ask the "Eddie Dolinish" question. As for me, I'm still waiting on the audio version. Maybe PK, you can use it for the background theme of the slide show.
the eddie dolinish song was the "B" side of "can't even get channel 12". sadly, neither ever made it to WARM's top 50 countdown.
Let's not forget "At the Waterhole".
OK, Now I'm lost,.....Joan ??????
It's Greek to me, Mrs. P.
Well at least that makes me feel better. For a moment I thought maybe they were playing tricks with my memory. They seem to be very secretive.....hmmm. To think all these years and we never knew........
It's in the same vein as "Oooh! What a mess she made."
well ladies, all I can say is now you know what our gang was always doing by the benches in front of the boro building while you were all in your cars circling the town. and those benches are long gone, heyna?
I believe the cars I was in were usually not in motion, unless you count the rocking going on inside. And don't make me start naming names of who was in the front/back seats!
Perhaps a list of "parking" areas and a rating to their quality would be interesting here. Rate their view/access/frequency of police hassle etc.
Tony, the firehouse is a great idea but I think we should hang out in front of the new CVS. We'll do it in honor of the book shop days. Or maybe we can use the senior citizens center !!! LOL
I like the firehouse idea. Can you still get a "Knox Mine Disaster" cake?
And "Remember the Alamo" was there too.
genny cream in the soda machine
Ok Mordy, now who is the one who didn't invite us to their party ? Or was it parties ???? No wonder you can remember Lake Genero, you were busy having your own party...without us !!
Ohhhhhhh, I see. We'll have to have another meeting now..........
Ok, so now I know what it was that could not be put on the blog ! Guess I'll have to take that to my grave now. I think maybe we should start thinking about all being buried in one spot.
such a nice post so color full,,
thanks for this link ,,
